Coins

The Currency Office of the Velocity Interoperability Network issues coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and of 1 and 2 credits. All eight coins of the First Series enter circulation together on 5 October 2026, and from that date the five coins of the Interim Issue are withdrawn as they are returned to the Office. The Interim coins remain legal tender until 30 September 2027.

The First Series coins are struck in three groups of metal, so that the groups can be told apart by colour: copper for the three smallest denominations, aluminium bronze for the three middle denominations, and cupro-nickel for the 1 credit coin and the centre of the 2 credit coin. Within each group the coins increase in size with value, and the edge of each coin is finished differently so that the denomination can also be identified by touch.

Specifications. The diameter, weight, composition and edge of each coin are set out below. All coins are 1.7 to 2.2 millimetres thick and are struck with a plain raised rim.

Designs. The coins share a common obverse and are grouped by metal on the reverse. Their motifs are drawn from the same sites and structures of the Network as the banknotes.

The common obverse
Every coin of the First Series carries the same obverse: the emblem of the Network, a lattice of twelve nodes joined by lines, with the name of the Network around the rim and the year of striking beneath.
The copper coins: 1, 2 and 5 cents
The reverse of each copper-plated coin shows a single stylised channel of the kind that appears on the reverse of the banknotes, with the denomination in large figures. The three coins differ in size only and are otherwise of one design.
The bronze coins: 10, 20 and 50 cents
The reverse of each aluminium bronze coin shows a relay tower, of the kind found at the Network's sites, with the denomination in figures to the right. The 20 cent coin has seven notches at the edge so that it can be told from the 10 and 50 cent coins by touch.
The 1 credit coin
The reverse shows the hall of the Central Exchange, the motif also carried by the 10 credit note, with the denomination in words below. The edge is reeded in four segments separated by plain sections.
The 2 credit coin
The only bimetallic coin of the series. The reverse shows the founding interconnection of the Network as a lattice of lines radiating from the centre into the outer ring, with the denomination in figures. The edge carries the words VELOCITY INTEROPERABILITY NETWORK in raised letters.

Legal tender. Coins are legal tender only up to a limit for any single payment, so that a payee cannot be required to accept a large sum in small coin. The limits apply to the total of all coins of the group tendered in one payment. A payee may accept coins beyond these limits but is not obliged to. Notes are not subject to any limit.

The Interim Issue. The five Interim coins were struck under contract before the Office existed. They carry a plain numeral on the reverse and the name of the Network on the obverse, without an emblem. All are being withdrawn from 5 October 2026 and cease to be legal tender on 30 September 2027; thereafter they are exchanged at face value by the Office without limit of time.

No counterfeit coin has been detected in the Network. A coin that is the wrong weight or colour, that has a seam at the edge or that does not ring when dropped on a hard surface should nevertheless be reported in the same way as a suspect note; see Counterfeit Reporting. The quantity of each coin in circulation is published on the Notes and Coins in Circulation page, and the exchange of bent, corroded or worn coins is described under Damaged and Withdrawn Currency.
