Banknotes and Coins

The credit is the unit of account of the Velocity Interoperability Network. It is divided into one hundred cents. The Currency Office of the Velocity Interoperability Network designs, issues and withdraws the notes and coins in which the credit is carried, and every note and coin it issues is legal tender throughout the Network at its face value.

Two issues are in question at present. The Interim Issue has circulated since 10 August 2026 and remains legal tender until 30 September 2027. The First Series, announced on 6 September 2026, is the first currency designed by the Office itself; its notes and coins enter circulation between 5 October and 7 December 2026 and will gradually replace the Interim Issue. Both issues are accepted at face value throughout the period in which they circulate together.

First Series issue begins on Monday 5 October 2026

The 5 and 10 credit notes and all eight coins of the First Series enter circulation on 5 October 2026. Interim notes and coins remain legal tender and should continue to be accepted.
The Interim Issue
Four notes (5, 10, 20 and 50 credits) and five coins (5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 credit), printed and struck under contract before the Office existed and put into circulation on 10 August 2026 under transitional arrangements. The Interim Issue remains legal tender until 30 September 2027.
The First Series
Five notes (5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 credits) and eight coins (1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 credits), designed by the Office and entering circulation between 5 October and 7 December 2026. The First Series replaces the Interim Issue over the twelve months that follow.

Denominations. The table below sets out every denomination of the credit, the form it takes in each issue and the date on which the First Series version enters circulation. Four denominations, the 1 and 2 cent coins, the 2 credit coin and the 100 credit note, appear for the first time in the First Series.

Legal tender. Notes of both issues are legal tender without limit. Coins are legal tender up to a limit that depends on their denomination: coins of 1, 2 and 5 cents for payments up to 2 credits, coins of 10, 20 and 50 cents for payments up to 10 credits, and coins of 1 and 2 credits for payments up to 100 credits. A payee may accept coins beyond these limits but is not obliged to. The limits are set out in full on the Coins page.

Schedule of issue. The dates below are fixed. Should any date change, the change will be announced in the Newsroom at least four weeks in advance.

  1. 10 August 2026

    Interim Issue enters circulation

Four notes and five coins issued under transitional arrangements ahead of the establishment of the Office.

  2. 5 October 2026

First Series: 5 and 10 credit notes and all eight coins

The lower denominations enter circulation first, as they are the most heavily used and the Interim coins the most worn.

  3. 2 November 2026

First Series: 20 and 50 credit notes

The two denominations that account for most of the value of notes in circulation, and the only denominations in which counterfeits have been detected.

  4. 7 December 2026

    First Series: 100 credit note

The first note of that denomination in the Network, issued in a smaller quantity for high-value payments.

  5. 30 September 2027

Interim Issue ceases to be legal tender

From 1 October 2027 Interim notes and coins need not be accepted in payment, but are exchanged at face value by the Office without limit of time.

The specifications and security features of the notes are set out on the Banknotes page and those of the coins on the Coins page. The quantity of each denomination in circulation is published on the Notes and Coins in Circulation page, and the arrangements for exchanging damaged notes and for the withdrawal of the Interim Issue on the Damaged and Withdrawn Currency page.
