About the Currency Office
The Currency Office of the Velocity Interoperability Network is responsible for the banknotes and coins of the Velocity Interoperability Network: their design, issue, distribution, withdrawal and replacement. It maintains the register of currency in circulation, publishes the security features by which a genuine note is known, examines suspected counterfeits and exchanges damaged and withdrawn notes and coins at face value.
The Office was established on 6 September 2026. It assumed on that day responsibility for the Interim Issue of notes and coins, which had circulated since 10 August 2026 under transitional arrangements, and announced the First Series of banknotes and coins, the first currency designed and issued by the Office itself. The 5 and 10 credit notes and all eight coins of the First Series enter circulation on 5 October 2026; the remaining notes follow on 2 November and 7 December 2026.
The Office is concerned with physical currency only. It does not set interest rates, manage the exchange value of the credit or hold the accounts of member organisations; those matters rest with the Treasury Department of the Network. The Office issues currency against the Treasury's requisitions and reports the quantity in circulation to it.
Responsibilities. The Office's work falls into five areas.
- Design and issue
- The design, printing and striking of the banknotes and coins of the Network, the setting of their specifications and the schedule by which each denomination is put into circulation.
- The register of currency in circulation
- A continuous record of every note and coin issued and withdrawn, by denomination and issue, from which the Office's quarterly statistics are compiled.
- Security and the examination of suspected counterfeits
- Publication of the security features by which a genuine note is known, receipt of suspected counterfeit notes and coins, their examination and the referral of detections to the appropriate authorities of the Network.
- Exchange and withdrawal
- The exchange of damaged notes and coins at face value, and the orderly withdrawal of issues that are superseded, beginning with the Interim Issue.
- Statistics and reporting
- Quarterly statistical releases on notes and coins in circulation, on issue and withdrawal and on counterfeit detections.
Structure. The Office is organised in four divisions and the Office of the Spokesperson. Each division is responsible for the pages of this site shown against it.
